You have absolutely no excuse now,
Marie thought as she sat down on the floor beside the Christmas tree, the Twelfth Day of Christmas was yesterday.
Marie leaned against the wall, letting her head drop back to gaze up at the ornaments decorating the Frasier fir. She wasn’t ready to dismantle the tree quite yet. If it were up to her, the house would stay dressed in all it’s holiday glory for another few weeks. But the reality was, the season was over and she had to take everything down.
It was actually quite depressing for her, sitting here, knowing this would be the last day to enjoy the scent of the tree, the glow of the lights, the greens on the mantle and the gifts left under the tree.
That was one thing she wouldn’t budge on, no matter what. All the opened presents must stay under the tree until it was time for the tree to come down. She didn’t know why she thought like that — she just did.
Her eyes wandered up the tree and landed on the blown glass head of the Devil. He wore a wicked grin plastered across his face and his horns were adorned in glitter.
She made a special hanger for this one… actually… a lot of her favorite ornaments had wire and bead hangers that Marie lovingly crafted herself. No cheap store-bought hooks for my fave’s! she thought with a smile.
Marie took a silent inventory of the ornaments… almost as if she was saying goodbye.
The oversized ornaments from Radio City Music Hall were among her most treasured. She would purchase a new one every year when they went to see the Christmas Spectacular in New York City. So far, she collected 8 of those, although she missed this year’s edition. Maybe I’ll order it online. I wonder how many of those I’d have if my Mom would have bought them for me every time she took us to see that show as a kid? Probably dozens by now! The thought made Marie smile with gratitude.
As she thought of her Mother, Marie caught sight of the Polish stars her Mom painstakingly assembled for her and her sisters. Each one took several hours of cutting and twisting paper, then sewing each twisted spike onto string to pull into an orb.
Unbelievable! Marie thought, Mom made dozens of these and she’s not even the one who’s Polish! I guess she did it to honor my Dad… the thick-headed Pollock that he is! Marie laughed out loud at her thoughts.
“Why must I take down the Christmas tree?!?” she lamented loudly. Her dogs cocked an ear at her frustration.
“Don’t worry, puppies… I’m OK,” Marie soothed.
She took one longing, last look at the grand fir adorned with decades of memories…

Even Santa faces she painted herself for a craft show -- then refused to sell them -- hung proudly among the green branches.
Marie’s dogs waited patiently for her to get to work. Even they could sense that this project was going to take a while. They nestled into pillows resting in the corner and looked intently into each other’s eyes. They communicated silently in the way that only a dog is able.
“Looks like Mom is having a tough one today. Is that a tear in her eye? She’s been staring at that tree for hours! She looks like she needs a break, I think it’s time she goes and enjoys HAPPY HOUR!”
